If a man can't enjoy some Blackberry Sudoku at a Remembrance Day ceremony, the terrorist have won
Hey, look, it’s our first post about “Canadian politics”, the purported purpose of this entire website! Alright, what earth-shattering topic do we get to tackle? The environment, or taxes, or some other big sexy thing? Nah, let’s go with some he-said she-said clownish bullshit posted in the Globe and Mail, Canada’s original sexy gossip blog!
Pictured is Rick Dykstra, Conservative MP for the riding of Twitter, playing Sudoku on his Blackberry at a Remembrance Day ceremony. Doesn’t he realize that it’s inappropriate to support Japanese games when among WWII Pacific Theatre vets? Why must you support Canada’s enemies, Rick Dykstra?
Anyways, according to Wikipedia, Dykstra’s the Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism (I wish I had a 31-syllable long title!), but according to Google Image Search this is a more accurate image of Rick Dykstra, or possibly former MLB player Lenny Dykstra, who can be sure? Dykstra was at a Remembrance Day ceremony and doing something on his stupid Blackberry. Thank God the Globe asked the tough questions! Care to explain, HMM?
But after a quick call to the MP’s office, it seems Mr. Dykstra was live-blogging at the event. In fact, he used his BlackBerry to take a picture of the cenotaph and the wreaths around it. Then he sent out a message, which he posted on his website.
Well, that settles that! It turns out Rick Dykstra was a real Canadian hero, and that Blackberrying at this ceremony was the most patriotic thing anyone has ever done. And I see absolutely no reason to question this story. I mean, who wouldn’t liveblog a Remembrance Day ceremony? Liveblogging is a perfect tool for the instant spread of information whenever pressing, important events are happening, like elections, natural disasters, Mad Men episodes, and – of course – Remembrance Day ceremonies. Who among us could honestly say they didn’t crave the instant, raw feedback of Rick Dykstra, a secretary of some sort, standing around a bunch of bling-clad veterans listening to the same In Flander’s Fields poem we’ve heard at every identical Remembrance Day ceremony since Kindergarten? I mean, I wasn’t at the ceremony, but there’s an outside chance that then a trumpet played “Taps”, and then there was a moment of silence – but WHO CAN KNOW FOR SURE if Rick Dykstra doesn’t tell us?
Rick Dykstra is a hero. He’s a hero of liveblogging, he’s a hero for overcoming the stereotype that secretaries have to be women, and he was a hero to millions as an MLB star nicknamed “Nails”. Sure, let’s let the Liberals respond anyways just for shits and giggles:
The Liberals are disputing Mr. Dykstra’s version of events, pointing to an RSS feed that suggests the item was posted this morning at 11:06 a.m. – after the photo went out – and not on Remembrance Day at 11:38 a.m.But Dave Schulz, who maintains Mr. Dykstra’s website, stands by the MP’s story. “The timing of these feeds is less than reliable and only meant as a notice to people who register that there is new information on the web site,” Mr. Schulz says. “For instance, the RSS feed for this posting, as well as for a second article posted at the same time, went out from the server at 6:27 a.m. this morning.”
Oh God, that’s hilarious. Basically when the Liberals took a picture of him playing Sudoku instead of getting misty-eyed at the playing of “Taps” like he was supposed to, he had to scramble to create a “liveblog” after the fact, since some teenage intern in his office told him “liveblog” was a word and it would make an excellent and convenient excuse for his horribleness.
Then the Tories, having no knowledge of how the internet works, would later realize that with newfangled computer technology, people can see when stuff gets posted online. Having no one else to blame, they took the Ted Stevens approach and just blamed technology in general. The sad part is, that excuse will probably stick. The only people who get riled up about this type of bullshit are about 70 years old, and 70 year olds are about as untrustworthy and scared of technology as they are of kids on their lawn and/or foreign people. Therefore, pressed with the excuse “He was totally liveblogging but it didn’t show up until the next day because thoooose daaaarn computeeers, always mixin’ up things!”, Globe readers will eat it up like they eat up so much boiled liver and porridge.
